Porcelain Bonded to Metal Crowns

Crowns have invariably been around for many years in many forms

In the anterior areas of the mouth, the smile area, aesthetically, we will try and use “all porcelain” crowns giving you the best in cosmetics and function.

Porcelain Bonded to Metal Crowns are appropriately named as this what the are  …

Porcelain technology in the past produced weaker porcelains and to give them a strength that would withstand the biting forces in the mouth, they needed a metal core for support. The core was usually gold based for technical reasons and because it was also bio-compatible for the placement in mouths.

Porcelain bonded to gold crowns are still used widely today but more so in the posterior, biting areas of your mouths where tremendous forces are used to chew food.

In some cases we still need to place porcelain bonded to metal crowns anteriorly either because the adjacent teeth are similar or because a much stronger crown is needed for good function.

The overall aesthetics of porcelain bonded to metal crowns is excellent when clinically prepared by an experienced dental surgeon working with technically excellent technicians, which of course CrystalClear Dental can guarantee.

The only potential cause for concern with porcelain bonded to metal crowns is that they invariably cause the adjacent gum tissues to move away leaving an unsightly black line around the margins.

Posteriorly, when used for you molar teeth this causes little problem as we try and create the margins above the gum line and even so, if any shrinkage occurs, it is not too visible  and creates few problems aesthetically.

Anteriorly, shrinkage  invariably does cause concern to many patients because of the discoloured margins. Everyone is different and for a few this may never happen.

For posterior teeth we are happy to place porcelain bonded to metal crown to help reduce costs and for functional reasons.

Anteriorly, where possible, we would advise that you to consider that aesthetics are very important and would recommend to all patients that the dentist prescribe good quality “all porcelain” crowns.
